In Your Community
In communities across the state, Vermonters are working together to reduce tobacco use.
With grants to local groups, and through direct community services, the Heath Department's Tobacco Control Program and District Offices bring statewide tobacco control efforts to the local level.
Community Tobacco Coalitions
Vermont's 20 Community Coalitions work regionally to coordinate events, distribute information, enhance media campaigns, refer community members to quitting resources and more. Coalitions also foster relationships with schools, hospitals, health care providers, non-profit organizations, businesses, local media, and law enforcement to support these various sectors in reducing tobacco use.
- Working with a community to make town parks smoke-free
- Visiting local businesses to encourage employees to quit tobacco by organizing & recruiting for cessation classes
- Hosting a car wash with local youth to promote the message of smoke free cars and homes
- Partnering with local mental health providers to encourage support for tobacco cessation among their clients
- Holding teen movie nights to educate teens about smoking in the movies, and motivate them to take action
- Encouraging local retail stores to make building entrances smoke-free
The statewide tobacco control program provides community coalitions with training and technical assistance to support its emphasis on the use of research-based prevention programs and strategies.
